I just saw this video which has now had over 114 million views online (according to news.com.au) and it is pretty awesome. In it they get some women to describe themselves to an ex police forensic sketch artist and he sketches them just based on their own description. Then the women leave, and another person enters and explains the first woman to the sketch artist, who does a new portrait based on the new description.

In all of the cases the second sketch as described by the stranger was significantly more beautiful than the one provided by the women being sketched. This just goes to show that we are often our own worst critics and you are actually more beautiful than you think.

If this doesn’t give you goosebumps I don’t know what will.

I mean they are always forcing their business cards on you, or randomly give you some product from your company, repeatedly, even when you have expressed disinterest, they will still make you take it.

So many people are told that to forward their business they need to network, network, NETWORK.

But the problem is that people are going about it all the wrong ways.

Most people start off on the wrong foot, by asking other people to do something for them.

I get asked questions like this;

“Glenn can you please take a look at my website and let me know what I can do to improve it? Thanks in advance.”

Do you see the problem here?

Starting off by asking someone to do something is no good way to start a new relationship, it is not a good way to build your network.

So how do you do this the right way?

To pique someone’s interest, you need to stop reaching out and asking for something, you need to reach out and offer something.

Think about it,

Even if you say “if there’s anything I can do to help you, please let me know”, that is still no good, as it is putting the work on them to come up with a way for you to help them.

A good example of what to do is something that a friend had said to me.

My friend was looking for help with running some facebook ppc ads. Instead of just asking for help with what I was doing, instead of asking me what I was doing, how to write a good ad, who to target etc, he came to me and said this;

“Glenn, I notice that your ads will need a lot of graphic design work for the landing and sales pages, do you need someone to do that work? Right now the cost for a decent landing page can range from $150 to $450, and I’ll happily do that work for you if you can show me what you know and we can work on this together. Does that seem like a fair deal?”

Of course I said yes to this.

Why?

Because they were offering me something that I wanted, something that had value to me.

So how do you figure out what people want?

Find the person who’s help you want, subscribe to their twitter, look through there blog posts. At one point they are going to complain about something that YOU can help with right now, then offer your services for free.

But a new study outlined in National Geographic has indicated that when it comes to buying light bulbs, people get turned off buying the energy-efficient ones if there is some kind of labelling stating that they are good for the environment.

This is because the environment debate in the US is so polarizing that some people automatically are discriminatory if they see anything environmentally friendly.

Where I am from, Australia, we passed a law in 2007 that would ban low efficiency incandescent light bulbs by 2010. There was no outcry, the change over went very smoothly, and you can no longer buy the classic light bulb in Australia. It is estimated that the change over alone will save 800,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases.

The US government has mandated that the sale of incandescent light bulbs must be stopped by 2040, with an estimated saving of 22% of household electricity, even taking into account the 32% increase in the number of homes.

Now I don’t know why it is so difficult for people to just get on board with the rest of the world on this, but I really wish that the US would pick itself up and help out, instead of dragging its feet.

There just aren’t that many jobs going around at the moment for new graduates.

I graduated with a degree in Nanotechnology, and just as I was graduating, the world was going through the financial slump that it has been in the past few years.

I have applied for hundreds if not thousands of jobs, but to no avail.

I have taken a lot of time off to go travelling, that is true, but when I really tried hard to get a job, I just haven’t had any luck.

I’m going to share with you the secret that I found that now allows me to travel the world and make money as I go.
The amazing secret is, I make money blogging.

Simple as that.

And I make good money too. I can now afford to travel so much solely based on the income that I make from blogging.

I have friends living in Thailand, Costa Rica, and I personally live in a ski resort at the moment, in Whistler, Canada.

I`m not saying that this is a way to get rich quick, it has actually taken me some serious effort to get where I am. But honestly, it is far less effort than the 5 years of school that I went to, and I am currently earning far more than I ever have from engineering.

Anyway just thought I would give you all a heads up on what I have found to work for me, and can work for you too if you are looking for another way of life.

OK. This is an important one.

Whether you realize it or not, you need an email list. You need a way to reach out to your subscribers on a personal level and connect with them. Blogs don’t do that. Facebook doesn’t do that. Only email.

There are lots of ways to build a good email list. But the main thing that you have to offer is some sort of value. Why would people want to give you permission to send them emails, unless there is something in it for them?

If it adds value, people will talk about it. And if people talk about it, others will want it.

All you have to do is ask for something in return — like their email address. Pretty soon, you’ll have a robust email list that you can use to build a tribe, sell products, drive traffic, or do whatever you like.

Why Email?

Because email is still one of the best ways to reach people online.

It’s practically the oldest piece of web technology, and there’s a reason it’s stuck around while other fads (remember chat rooms?) have faded. There’s a reason for that.

It is a direct link from you into someone’s home or office.

Plus, if you build your own email list, that’s another piece of property that you own (unlike a fan base on Twitter or Facebook), and you can take it with you wherever you go (even if you start a new blog).

Isn’t email marketing dead?

In a word: No.

As someone recently pointed out, if email is dead, why does every major social network ask for your email address before you can create an account?

Because email is still the most powerful way to communicate online.

Every day, people check their inbox’s (often multiple times per day). They sit in front of their screen, glued to Outlook or GMail or whatever, constantly refreshing and waiting for more mail.

No, email is not dead. It is very much alive. It’s almost as old as the Internet itself. And in spite of fads and bogus predictions, it continues to stick around and outlast the fads.

So how do you get started building your email list?

There are a few things you need:

1. Get a good email service (like Aweber).  Aweber offers a $1 month-long trial. I personally use Aweber and it’s great, I will be doing a review on it shortly.

2. Create an awesome signup form. It needs to be obvious and not hideously ugly. If your website doesn’t have a clear opt-in form, then you’re missing out on a lot.

3. Offer an incentive. This can be a free video or a free MP3 download — whatever your readers would find value in.

Needless to say, if you haven’t tapped into the power of a good email list, you’re losing out on a ton of opportunities.
